a fortress called varberg (at time written wardbergh, watch hill ) erected in 1280s part of chain of military establishments along coast, in danish territory. in middle of 14th century, old settlement getakärr 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) north of fortress took new name fortress. town moved 5 km (3 mi) northwards around year 1400. destroyed during kalmar war (1611-1612) , rebuilt near fortress. in 1645 halland passed denmark sweden treaty of brömsebro period of 30 years. had @ time 600 inhabitants. transfer made permanent treaty of roskilde in 1658. town moved again after fire in 1666, location city centre today. city devastated huge fire in 1863 , subsequently rebuilt stone or brick houses. in 1890 population figure had passed 4,000 , industrialization reached 8,500 in 1930. local government reform of 1971 made varberg seat of larger varberg municipality, current population of close 56,000 inhabitants. although several houses torn down in 1970s, of city center still remains intact.
