submarines

in 1995, rsn acquired challenger class (formerly known sjöormen class) submarine swedish navy , 3 in 1997, making them singapore s first underwater platforms. submarines designed swedish operations in baltic sea, various modifications required suit them tropical waters. comprehensive tropicalisation programme carried out 4 submarines, involved installing air conditioning, marine growth protection systems , corrosion-resistant piping. believed challenger class purchased develop required submarine operations expertise before selecting modern class of submarines replace them, since boats on 40 years old. 4 challenger class , 2 archer class submarines form 171 squadron of rsn. 2 rsn challenger-class submarines, rss challenger , rss centurion, retired service in 2015.




singapore s ministry of defence (mindef) signed agreement kockums supply of 2 archer class (formerly known västergötland class) submarines rsn on 4 november 2005. more 20 years old , in reserve swedish navy, submarines transferred rsn on completion of modernisation , conversion operation in tropical waters. rss archer relaunched on 16 june 2009 , recommissioned on 2 december 2011. archer class submarines equipped air independent propulsion system. enables submarines have longer submerged endurance , lower noise signature, enhancing stealth capability of submarines. advanced sonar system allows submarines detect contacts @ further distance, while torpedo system has better target acquisition capability, allows submarines engage contacts @ further range.


singapore’s ministry of defence (mindef) signed contract procure 2 new type 218sg attack submarines thyssenkrupp marine systems in november 2013, new submarines, along singapore’s 2 refurbished archer-class submarines, replace 4 1960s-vintage challenger-class submarines procured singapore in 1990s. german industry experts commenting deal said project cost 1 billion euros , expected take 6 years complete. first submarine delivered singapore navy in 2020. on may 2017 in conjunction singapore s first international maritime review , international maritime defence exhibition , conference singapore’s ministry of defence announced 2 more type 218sg attack submarines thyssenkrupp marine systems purchased making total of 4 new submarines initial 2.




mv swift rescue, submarine support , rescue ship launched 29 november 2008. carries deep submergence rescue vehicle deep search , rescue 6 (dsar-6).




frigates

the formidable class multi-role stealth frigates latest platforms enter service rsn, , multi-mission derivatives of french navy’s la fayette class frigate. frigates key information nodes , fighting units, , “by far advanced surface combatants in southeast asia .


the frigates equipped sikorsky s-70b naval helicopters, international derivative of sikorsky sh-60b seahawk. mindef signed contract sikorsky aircraft corporation in january 2005 acquire 6 of these helicopters, organic frigates. these naval helicopters equipped anti-surface , anti-submarine combat systems, extending ship’s own surveillance , over-the-horizon targeting , anti-submarine warfare capabilities. naval helicopters raised squadron in republic of singapore air force , piloted air force pilots, system operators rsn. 2 more s-70b helicopters ordered in february 2013.


the frigates have special surface-to-air missile configuration, combining thales herakles radar sylver a50 launcher , mix of mbda aster 15 , 30 missiles.


the lead ship of class, rss formidable commissioned on 5 may 2007, marking 40th year of rsn. 6 frigates form 185 squadron of rsn.




corvettes

in 1983, rsn ordered 6 victory class corvettes friedrich lürssen werft of germany. first corvette built in germany while remaining 5 built locally st marine. corvettes first class of ships in rsn have anti-submarine capability. corvettes noted being fastest ships in fleet, , tall mast, making them top-heavy compared ships of similar class. however, suitable within calm singapore waters. 6 corvettes form 188 squadron of rsn.




patrol vessels

the fearless class patrol vessels built locally st marine replace older coastal patrol crafts, transferred police coast guard. first 6 vessels of class armed anti-submarine warfare missions, , placed under command of fleet 189 squadron upon commission. in january 2003, rss courageous badly damaged in collision container ship in singapore strait. in january 2005, 189 squadron transferred then-coastal command fleet, , twelve ships form 182/189 squadron. in may 2016, completion of rss independence s sea trials, 182 , 189 squadron merged form new 182 squadron.


on 30 january 2013, mindef awarded st engineering contract design , build of 8 new vessels replace fearless-class patrol vessels. st engineering announced group’s marine arm, st marine, build 8 vessels @ singapore benoi yard, core combat systems , combat system integration solutions being supplied group’s electronics arm, st electronics. st marine carry out platform system integration lead system integrator. first vessel expected delivered in 2016 , 8 vessels operational 2020.




amphibious transport docks

the endurance class amphibious transport docks biggest class of ships in rsn. designed , built locally st marine replace old county class tank landing ships (lst). each ship fitted dock can accommodate 4 landing craft , flight deck can accommodate 2 medium lift helicopters. while rsn describes endurance class lsts, lack beaching capability traditionally associated lsts, , docks , flight decks qualify endurance class more amphibious transport docks.


the ships provide sea transportation personnel , equipment saf s overseas training, training platform rsn s midshipmen. rss endurance became first rsn ship circumnavigate globe when participated in 2000 international naval review in new york city. ships actively involved in humanitarian , disaster relief operations, notably in east timor, persian gulf, tsunami-hit indonesian province of aceh , recently, disappearance of indonesia airasia flight 8501. 4 ships form 191 squadron of rsn.




mine countermeasures vessels

the rsn acquired mine countermeasure capabilities 1975, when usn s uss thrasher , uss whippoorwill reactivated rsn s engineers , technicians in california. redwing class coastal minesweepers commissioned rss jupiter , rss mercury.


these 2 ships replaced bedok class mine countermeasures vessels. first ship, rss bedok, built karlskronavarvet in sweden based on landsort class design. remaining 3 ships prefabricated in sweden , transferred singapore final assembly st marine. ships constructed of glass reinforced plastic maintain low magnetic , acoustic signatures, , fitted voith schneider propellers, giving highest manoeuvrability in navy. ships form 194 squadron of rsn.

the rsn operates protector unmanned surface vehicles. deployed endurance class landing platform dock ships north persian gulf peacekeeping operations in 2005, performed surveillance , reconnaissance, force protection duties more 8 hours @ go.
