white married woman named georgiana, in 1861. had first child, anna, in 1862 while living in canada. after war, had 2 more children, jane in 1867 , henry in 1869. after war, white tried , failed gain appointment freedman s bureau, , returned short time indiana , ohio before moving north carolina. georgiana died time white moved north carolina in 1872. time after georgiana died, white remarried woman named sallie. sallie born in 1860. in 1874, white ran democrat congress in north carolina s black second district against john adams hyman, lost hyman. in 1876, garland campaigned in support of democrat samuel j. tilden president against eventual winner, republican rutherford b. hayes. around time, white pastor @ church in halifax, north carolina, dismissed congregation support of democrats before end of 1870s. when federal government withdrew north carolina in 1877, white s position supporter of democrats put him on side of party come power in state. @ same time, put him @ odds blacks in area.


in 1882, white s health forced him move wilmington, north carolina, hoped find relief. however, health worsened , moved northern part of state, settling in 1884 in weldon, north carolina, near former home in halifax. bedridden of time after september 1884, , in july 1885 applied washington invalid pension based on respiratory illness contracted during siege of petersburg. application took 5 years process had not been hospitalized during active service. moved washington dc, possibly closer attorney, in spring of 1889. in june 1890, invalid pension laws former soldiers no longer required soldier s disability due injury or illness contracted on active duty , in july, white awarded pension backdated july 7, 1885. while in capital, worked messenger. illness continued , died july 5, 1894 in washington d.c. , buried @ arlington national cemetery.
