a ferry provides daily service town of triabunna jetty in darlington bay @ northern end of maria island, distance sea of 16 km or 9 nautical miles. in summer service twice daily. previous ferry operation out of louisville (near orford) defunct. common dolphins, australian fur seals , seabirds such australasian gannets , shy albatrosses seen on voyage. tourist flights island can made cambridge airport or friendly beaches.


facilities

very basic accommodation available in darlington in penitentiary , former place of internment, built during first convict era. bookings can made parks , wildlife service. there ten rooms have bunk beds vinyl mattresses, table , chairs , wood heater. 9 of rooms sleep 6 people each , tenth sleeps fourteen people. cooking gear, lighting, bedding , food must brought island. there no electricity or running water in rooms, toilets, hot showers , barbecues nearby. many visitors choose camp in camping area in darlington - advance booking not necessary this. visitor in vain shop, hotel or restaurant, , travels island must self-sufficient.

from encampment cove little more 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) walk ruins of maria island s second (probation-era) convict station @ point lesueur on island’s west coast (also known long point). soldiers beach , bloodstone beach on western side of island worth effort takes reach them, shoal bay , riedle bay, beaches either side of mcraes isthmus.


in 2007 disused coastal trader, troy d, scuttled outside marine section of national park, 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi) west-southwest of painted cliffs, intention of creating dive wreck.
