brown appointed coach of dragons 2003 season, becoming youngest non-playing coach in years in nrl @ age 29. during first season, @ match on sunday, 13 april 2003 against manly @ win stadium, frustrated nathan brown berated skipper trent barrett, brett firman , lance thompson on sideline in 53rd minute scores locked @ 12-all. brown slapped barrett across cheek , grabbed jerseys of barrett , thompson. incident seen crowd , other players on big screen , proved decisive turning point manly ran in 5 second half tries win 38-12. after match, brown apologetic barrett , later fined $5,000 nrl.
after finishing second in 2005 competition, brown s team lost preliminary final eventual premiers, wests tigers. following many injuries , team losses throughout 2007 season, under pressure keep job heading 2008 season.
on 1 april 2008, announced brown not coach dragons in 2009 season, ended association club stretches start of joint venture. replaced wayne bennett. on 18 july 2008 announced brown had signed 3-year deal english super league team, huddersfield, same club tigers superstar brett hodgson joined.

in second season, brown guided st helens 1st place in super league , victory in grand final, after defeating wigan warriors 14-6. in october 2014, announced brown leave club return native australia, citing family reasons . st. helens reached 2014 super league grand final in defeated wigan warriors 14-6.

in february 2015, melbourne storm announced brown had joined club coaching consultant . based in sydney, brown worked on scouting assignments , provided specialist coaching club s hookers. on 9 september 2015, brown signed 3-year contract coach newcastle knights.
