the republic of singapore navy traces origins royal navy in 1930s 2 patrol craft. straits settlements royal navy volunteer reserve established on 20 april 1934 , in 1941 became singaporean division of malayan volunteer reserve during world war ii.

in 1948, malayan force raised singapore government , later granted title of royal malayan navy in 1952 in recognition of services in action during malayan emergency.
on 16 september 1963, singapore admitted state of malaysia under terms of confederation , royal malayan navy renamed royal malaysian navy. singapore division of malayan royal navy volunteer reserve formally transferred command of royal navy malaysian navy on 22 september 1963, becoming singapore volunteer force (svf).

on 9 august 1965, singapore seceded malaysia form independent , sovereign nation within commonwealth of nations. fledgling navy had 2 wooden ships then, namely rss panglima (90 motorized fishing vessel built rn in 1944 , sent singapore in 1948) , rss singapura (a captured japanese minelayer). panglima replaced wooden vessel in 1956 same name. on 22 january 1966, svf renamed singapore naval volunteer force.
on 5 may 1967, ensign hoisted first time. few months later in september, snvf renamed people s defence force (sea) under sea defence command (sdc). sdc again renamed maritime command (mc) in 1968.
under charge, set out on expansion program able carry out seaward defense more effectively. during period, navy saw addition of 6 first generation of independence class patrol vessels in december 1970. growing constraints , strategic need base located nearer singapore straits necessitated new base, , brani naval base on pulau brani formally opened in december 1970.

the rsn came being on 1 april 1975, when saf established component forces 3 distinct services, , has kept name ever since. colonel aeria stepped down post chief of singapore maritime command.
the fleet has expanded massively since 1975 , equivalent navy of nordic nation. took part in humanitarian relief missions during 2004 asian tsunami , assisted in both search mh flight 370 in gulf of thailand , qz flight 8501 in karimata strait.
the singapore navy has increased capability deal increasingly complex environments both abroad , close home. includes combating rise of piracy surrounding waters of adjacent malacca straits , formerly disputed island of pedra branca in south china sea, considered vital sea lines of communications. in addition, has engaged in anti piracy operations in gulf of aden , horn of africa under international task forces.

2004–2008 multi-national force – iraq. ships participated in iraq war , returned home after 2 or 3 months deployment in persian gulf without ground troops involved. singapore s withdrawal acknowledged on 23 december 2008.
