attraction s marquee
the first incarnation of backlot tour loaded @ former entrance magic of disney animation. original tour far longer , more elaborate final version. former tour drove through new york street/streets of america. however, due surprise popularity of park, new york street removed tour , made public walking space within first few years of operation. remained open pedestrians until april 2, 2016 when streets of america closed. after driving through new york street, tram drove catastrophe canyon.
after visiting canyon, guests disembarked @ final tour s exit area. area studio catering co. restaurant & adjacent shop stood until streets of america closed break area guests before embarking on second half of backlot tour. break area expanded include area kids play, called honey, shrunk kids: movie set adventure. second half of tour walking tour. encompassed water special effects tank, effects shop, , existing soundstages along mickey avenue , soundstages house walt disney: 1 man s dream , voyage of little mermaid. guests viewed soundstages using overhead walkways. portions of walkway can still seen in park. noticeably, recent backlot tour entrance , former legend of captain jack sparrow entrance, there walkway bridges. new york street, due overwhelming popularity of disney s hollywood studios, former backlot areas opened guests (present day mickey avenue & southern animation courtyard).
much of former walking portion of backlot tour became own attraction, backstage pass, separate original tour. reduced overall tour time. around same time, entrance backlot tour moved end of mickey avenue, new entrance ramp built water effects tank, prop warehouse building constructed additional queue, , new loading area trams.
in 2001, backstage pass closed. in april 2001, soundstage 3 opened public house wants millionaire - play it! , closed in 2006. in 2008, soundstage 3 , adjacent soundstage 2 converted toy story midway mania! attraction. soundstage 1 housed gift shop star wars weekends . in summer of 2014, housed wandering oaken s trading post , sauna . currently, houses third track populartoy story midway mania!.
the adjacent building, unnamed enclosed area , theater, housed many years attraction called making of ______ (the blank filled in name of next upcoming film either walt disney pictures or touchstone pictures). when walking tour removed backlot tour, became separate attraction, mentioned backstage pass attraction. in 2001, space converted walt disney: 1 man s dream. display area of building emptied theater occupied voyage of little mermaid. within months of park s opening, theater became separate venue walking tour portion of backlot tour. first show in new separate theater here come muppets. when original theater separated, new smaller theater built right behind making of attraction. current theater guests enter in walt disney: 1 man s dream.

in 2003, residential street walled off tour , demolished. land used lights, motors, action stunt show. addition of stunt show caused backlot tour re-routed go around large stadium. small portions of former residential street turned areas tour s relocated , downsized boneyard , tram roadways. addition of stunt show caused ny street lose arch, area needed tour tram turn around arrive @ exit station. overall, tram portion of tour reduced due new stunt show.
in 2008, imagineering announced cast members automated narration spiel in development replace live tour guides on shuttles portion of tour. special effects water tank continued have live cast until attraction closed due volunteer guests. entire attraction went down 2 months refurbishment on january 4, 2009. ride briefly closed down in february 2010, along adjacent studio catering company , honey shrunk kids movie set adventure. final refurbishment before attraction closed.
closure
on september 20, 2014 announced cast members ride temporarily close on september 27, 2014 orchestral facility. on september 28, marquee , sign @ entrance removed , painted over. @ time of attraction s closing, there no word replace it. however, later annonouced @ d23 expo 2015 land taking backlot tour, majority of streets of america area make room star wars land , toy story land. construction began in mid-2016.
