nevada s construction authorized act of congress on 4 march 1911. contract went fore river shipbuilding company on 22 january 1912 total of $5,895,000 (not including armor , armament), , time of construction 36 months. secondary contract signed on 31 july 1912 $50,000 cover additional cost of geared cruising unit on each propeller shaft; extended planned construction time 5 months. keel laid down on 4 november 1912, , 12 august 1914, ship 72.4% complete. nevada launched on 11 july 1914; sponsored miss eleanor anne seibert, niece of governor tasker oddie of nevada , descendant of first secretary of navy, benjamin stoddert. launch attended several prominent members of government, including governor oddie, governor david i. walsh of massachusetts, senator key pittman of nevada, secretary of navy josephus daniels , assistant secretary of navy franklin d. roosevelt, later become 32nd president of united states.
nevada had undergo many different tests , trials prior commissioning ensure met terms of original contract. these began on 4 november 1915, when ship conducted twelve-hour endurance run , down new england coast , reaching top speed of 21.4 kn (24.6 mph; 39.6 km/h). though acceptance trials interrupted on 5 november because of gale , rough seas, continued on 6th test of fuel economy; consisted of 24-hour run nevada steamed @ 10 kn (12 mph; 19 km/h). test results positive: oil consumption of battlewagon 6 lb per knot lower contract had demanded. test conducted 12 hours @ 15 kn (17 mph; 28 km/h), better result of 10 lb per knot lower contract specifications. after completing of these tests , running trials off rockland, maine, nevada sailed boston , new york navy yards equipment, torpedo tubes, , ammunition hoists. when of preliminaries completed, nevada commissioned on 11 march 1916 @ charlestown navy yard, , william s. sims first captain of new ship.
