dawlish town association football club formed in 1889. original name dawlish argyle argyle dropped many years ago. name ‘town’ added in recent years in order distinguish club other local teams. in years club played @ 2 different locations before moving present-day site, known sandy lane, midway through 20th century.


originally, there 1 team, club added side around same time moved sandy lane. 1950, dawlish introduced third team junior football. success of junior side not far away, team winning junior 3b league in season 1953–54 100% record , league cup well.


one of earliest recorded honours occurred in season 1931–32 when club lifted east devon senior cup. in 1960, dawlish played torquay based side transpired title of east devon champions . dawlish won game 3 – 0 , duly recognised east devon champions.


dawlish town’s best ever season in 1972–73. there 2 sides @ time both sides won every competition entered – total of 7 trophies in all! 1st team won following: exeter & district premier league; devon premier cup; east devon senior cup; sellick memorial cup; rothmans invitation trophy. 2nd team won following: exeter & district senior league; geary cup.


after such success, club decided 1st team should join western league in season 1973–74 2nd team moving devon & exeter premier division. @ time, town of dawlish had 2 other senior saturday sides playing under banner of al dawlish. agreement made al dawlish join dawlish town , 2 sunday senior teams running 1983 1990, senior playing strength of club considerable. in 1970s dawlish ran youth team first honours being bevin trophy @ under 15 level in season 1973–74 , devon youth cup @ under 18 level in season 1975–76. full youth section formed in 1983 , under separate committee, 5 teams represented club in various age groups. 1989 1 of best years under 14’s not winning league, league cup final @ torquay united s plainmoor ground. youth football continues flourish within town , under banner of dawlish united youth & mini soccer.


in season 1988–89, dawlish 3rd team won devon & exeter league senior division 3 remaining unbeaten entire season , dropping 3 points.


as requirement of western league football, dawlish town installed floodlights on ground in 1987, , official opening 9 february 1987, celebrated when queens park rangers brought full squad play 1st team. @ beginning of 1987–88 season, dawlish played host aberdeen , in season 1988–89 both chelsea , watford visited dawlish. chelsea in fact played twice @ dawlish, playing torquay united in pre-season friendly torquay united’s ground not ready host pre-season friendlies. dawlish have played crewe alexandra on several occasions having established close relationship manager dario gradi. dario gradi spotted talents of dawlish youth player seth johnson, , not know – seth johnson not played crewe alexandra, went on play derby county , leeds united becoming full england international. part of western league development standards, dawlish built new changing rooms in readiness 1989–90 season. since time, dawlish have hosted many football league teams including burnley, lincoln, leyton orient, bury, bristol city, huddersfield town, sheffield wednesday , wimbledon our local senior teams plymouth argyle, torquay united , exeter city. not every club in country can 1 of teams have played @ wembley stadium once let alone twice! in may 1996 dawlish town won inaugural carlsberg pub cup final wembley stadium hosting final. dawlish town won cup 4 – 2 on penalties undoubted hero being dawlish town’s goalkeeper jamie day saved 2 penalties. dawlish had won semi-final @ anfield 2 goals nil. second visit wembley on 22 september 1996 when dawlish played dutch carlsberg champions brigade bodega in first ever carlsberg european pub cup championship. on occasion dawlish lost 1 – 0 after conceding late goal. in season 1999-00, dawlish regained western league premier division place after finishing runners-up in division one. due fantastic support 2nd team players under guidance of dave cleave , ray green, , wonderful support dawlish united under 16s, dawlish able endure difficult period in history @ time. season 2002–03 saw introduction of ladies team in first season secured 3rd position in devon league first division. season 2003–04 saw club re-enter 3rd team in devon & exeter league intermediate division 3 , gained promotion intermediate iii sadly saw 1st team relegated western league division 1 , 2nd team devon & exeter senior division two.


at around 04:00 hrs on 5 august 2004, club hit devastating blow when wooden stand (built in 1942), , had witnessed of history of club destroyed fire.


season 2004–05 saw 1st , 2nd teams establish league positions. 3rd team continued flourish under manager tim bradshaw , secured promotion devon & exeter league intermediate division two. season 2005–06 resounding success 1st team. promotion western league premier division secured champions, carl cliff-brown being top goalscorer entire league. 2nd team placed in devon & exeter league division senior 3 after league re-organisation , missed out on promotion.


yet again 3rd team enjoyed promotion year, time finishing runners-up secure position in intermediate 2006–07. @ beginning of season 2006–07 dawlish town played pre-season friendly torquay united , marked occasion having new grandstand officially opened jointly torquay united chairman mike bateson, dawlish town’s managing director terence stone , chairman , director dave fenner. in recognition of outstanding support given club terence stone, grandstand duly named terence stone stand .


season 2006–07 saw 1st team consolidate in premier division of western league , reserves finishing runners in devon , exeter football league senior division three.


season 2007–08 outstanding first team winning 2 cups – les phillips cup , devon st. luke s bowl – , finishing in highest ever league position – western league premier division runner-up.


season 2008–09 end of era manager chris myers saw 1st team have unbeaten start season under new manager adam kerswell until losing job see adam shearer return club finished 3rd in league. striker joe bushin hit 39 goals league top scorer.


season 2009–10 saw ex. barnstaple manager jeff evans take on managerial role of club chris porter assistant. chris known taking torquay boys grammar school national cup final held @ manchester city s city of manchester ground , won cup. season 09/10 saw goodbye of striker joe bushin, joined tiverton town. since then, 2 have worked bring in lots of new faces @ club. club reached fa vase 5th, being defeated gresley town in replay @ moat ground after 2 battling legs of football.


in 2010/11 season saw adam kerswell take on again lasted no longer month in charge before captain gary fisher given role of player/manager. march 2011 saw dave fenner step down chairman concentrate more on work commitments. fishers managerial campaign proved high success bringing in results have seen dawlish rise low 15th 6th in table. jules ematti-ematti , joe bushin leaving club pursue careers @ higher level, new dawlish team including likes of karl baker, liam mcauley, clay bond, alex narramore , manager himself battled hard in proved memorable final season club.


dawlish town quit western league on july 23, 2011.
