c.c. crews appointed captain in confederate states army in february 1862 , given responsibility company of 2nd georgia cavalry, recruited randolph , calhoun counties. deployed in june chattanooga 8th texas cavalry brigade under command of nathan bedford forrest, participated in first battle of murfreesboro, , operated far north elizabethtown , lebanon junction, kentucky in september. captured during 1 of these raids @ glasgow, kentucky col. sanders d. bruce of 20th regiment kentucky volunteer infantry on 1 october 1862, exchanged. november, c.c. elected lt. col. in january 1863, col. c.c crews received command of own brigade, crews brigade (2nd, 3rd, 4th georgia , 7th alabama), part of cavalry corps under command of major general joseph wheeler. wheeler , forrest operated in area of fort donelson , dover, tennessee in february during battle of dover (1863), @ time col. c.c. crews wounded in hip. wounded c.c. s younger brother, 1st lt. fleming jordan crews, second in command of company a, 2nd georgia, returning @ end of year command company captain.


chickamauga

during battle of chickamauga, col. c.c. crews commanded 1st brigade (general john a. wharton division, major general wheeler corps) consisting of 2nd, 3rd , 4th georgia cavalry , malone s alabama regiment. captured lookout mountain, earned col. wheeler, morgan, crews , harrison commendation in september 1863 major general wheeler, tender zeal, energy , gallantry during engagement . in october, crews georgia brigade helped participate in capture of mcminnville, tennessee, during wheeler s october 1863 raid.


knoxville

in december 1863, crews brigade, consisted of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th , 6th georgia (general john t. morgan s division, major general william t. martin s cavalry corps), part of confederate forces under lieutenant general james longstreet in knoxville campaign. earned citation gallantry in battle of mossy creek general martin, have never witnessed greater gallantry displayed colonel crews , officers , men of first, second, third , sixth georgia cavalry...col. c.c. crews deserves mention skill , bravery .


atlanta

with start of atlanta campaign, col. c.c. crews commanded regiment under general alfred iverson, jr. (general martin s division, major general wheeler s corps) in april 1864. col. c.c. crews received surrender of highest ranking union officer of war, major general george stoneman (future governor of california), during stoneman s aborted attempt free union prisoners @ andersonville prison. local newspaper @ time reported, ...a flag of truce sent gen. stoneman col. crews, proposing unconditional surrender of whole of command...col. crews received flag, , ordered stoneman s army stack arms. 6 hundred cavalry , 2 pieces of artillery obeyed order... . captured stoneman s aid, myles keogh, later casualty of battle of little bighorn. during wheeler s raid of 10 aug.-10 sept. 1864, crews georgia brigade participated in second battle of dalton, raids in middle tennessee, , skirmishes in florence, alabama. more skirmishes continued in alabama during month of october. november 1864 found crews brigade around macon fighting union s col. atkins 2nd brigade cavalry. in december 1864, brigade participated in battle of waynesboro, georgia, part of sherman s march sea, culminated in helping lieutenant general william j. hardee s evacuation of savannah, georgia. year ended note major general wheeler, ...allen, humes, anderson, dibrell, hagen, crews, ashby, harrison , breckenridge , many other brave men gallantry have witnessed here still guide , lead in battles yet won.. .

during carolinas campaign col. c.c. crews commanded crews brigade consisting of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th , 12th georgia cavalry (general william w. allen s division, major general wheeler s corps) , recommended promoted brigadier general @ beginning of 1865. in february 1865, c.c. operated in area of augusta, georgia, upper 3 runs area of aiken, south carolina, , saluda river area of columbia, south carolina under orders of major generals d.h. hill , benjamin f. cheatham. col. crews commanded cavalry in area of salisbury, north carolina , high point, north carolina @ end of april under orders of general j.e. johnston. col. charles c. crews , capt. fleming jordan crews paroled @ charlotte, north carolina, on may 3, 1865, under terms agreed between general joseph e. johnston , major general william tecumseh sherman on april 26, 1865. in final message major general wheeler corps, pointed out ...colonels crews, cook , pointer...are still disabled wounds... , second time c.c. crews wounded in action, ...while nobly carrying out orders upon field.
