1994: mancow muller of kyld-fm orchestrates stunt blocking off westbound lanes of san francisco–oakland bay bridge during rush hour while on-air sidekick got haircut, in response (false) allegations then-president bill clinton have caused delays @ los angeles international airport getting hair cut aboard air force one. muller , radio station both got sued.
1995: howard stern responds death of singer selena comment on how alvin , chipmunks have more soul latin musicians , spanish people have worst taste in music. stern survived resultant outrage hispanic community, extended far arrest warrant harlingen, texas local justice of peace left open year but, because stern never entered harlingen, went unenforced.
1998: stern banned chom-fm in montreal after remarking there s (french) language turns pussy-assed jack-off. other canadian affiliate, cilq/toronto, sustained barrage of complaints 3 years afterward before dropping show in 2001.
june 12, 2001: rumor britney spears dead scotched publicists after story spread 2 radio djs , hoax website using bbc logo. dallas shock jocks kramer , twitch told listeners kegl-fm evening show pop singer spears , boyfriend justin timberlake had been involved in car accident in los angeles. hoax sparked panic among fans, called police , fire departments in hundreds. story turned spoof version of bbc news online web page, , link sent around world e-mail. bbc lodged strong protest, , spoof page removed.
august 16, 2002: opie , anthony sponsored contest goal have sex in notable public places, called sex sam. contest went without major outcry until sex sam 3 after couple had sex in vestibule @ st. patrick s cathedral. resulting controversy, coupled earlier controversy stemming raunchy party in buffalo, new york, led infinity broadcasting cancelling opie , anthony show. infinity fined us$357,500 incident.
2003: tom leykis outs name of accuser in kobe bryant sexual assault case. woman s name had been redacted other media reports case date.
january 2004: bubba love sponge receives $755,000 fine fcc series of sketches implied cartoon characters having sex.
april 8, 2004: howard stern s show dropped clear channel communications after fined us$495,000 number of statements made during stern show. stern later used remaining market share criticize clear channel , bush administration, , left public airwaves move satellite radio, not subject same fcc decency regulations.
