washington stationed in england united states air force during 1960s. while stationed in east anglia, washington became known frequent stand-in @ gigs around london. when guitarist pete gage saw him @ nightclub in 1965, asked washington join new group, become geno washington & ram jam band. gage later formed vinegar joe elkie brooks , robert palmer. band s name came ram jam inn, old coaching inn on a1 (great north road) @ stretton, near oakham, rutland.


they had 2 of biggest selling uk albums of 1960s, both of live albums. commercially successful album, hand clappin, foot stompin, funky-butt ... live!, in uk albums chart 38 weeks in 1966 , 1967, peaking @ number 5 on chart. other album hipster flipsters finger poppin daddies, reached number 8 on uk album chart. group had number of moderate uk singles chart hits during 1966–67 on pye label: water (which reached no.39), hi hi hazel (no.45), que sera sera (no.43) , michael (the lover) (no.39). managed build strong following crowds , due touring , energetic performances. pye label mates , rivals jimmy james , vagabonds, became popular mod scene. band broke in autumn of 1969 , band members went own ways while geno washington continued solo artist before returning united states. keyboard player geoffrey k. pullum became academic linguist, , today professor @ university of edinburgh , well-known linguistics blogger @ language log , lingua franca websites.
