etymology

döderhultsvik original name before town charter granted in 1856. name changed oscarshamn (meaning: oscar s port) after king oscar of sweden. spelling has later changed oskarshamn.

struggle town charter

the location of oskarshamn known döderhultsvik since medieval age. in 1645, city of kalmar, south, made request royal government on holding commerce in bay there, granted, giving merchancy rights köping. there followed 200 years of merchancies in town, during governed , dependent on kalmar; while surrounding towns , municipalities made frequent requests grant charter, consequently turned down each of attempts made in years: 1786, 1798, 1800, 1815, 1818, 1823, 1825, 1830 , 1838. in 1843 got independence, local council, council occupied citizens of kalmar. in 1854, king oscar of sweden promised grant charter had fulfilled demands, including building prison , council hall, among other things. when had accomplished feats, charter granted, , city became 1 of cities of sweden starting 1856, on may 1. status has today no legal significance, oskarshamn seat of larger oskarshamn municipality, without being political entity of own.

recent history

industrialisation began inauguration of railway line nässjö. on, industries harbour began expand. biggest private employer long time oskarshamn shipyard, @ height had 1500 employees. in 1970s, swedish shipbuilding industry suffered large financial crisis , many shipyards closed down. in oskarshamn, shipyard went through large downsizing left many people unemployed.

however, @ around same time, 2 major industries established in oskarshamn. in 1966, scania ab bought truck cab factory, had been building truck cabs since 1948, , started expanding. scania factory today 1 of biggest employers in kalmar county 2000 employees. liljeholmens stearinfabriks ab, established in oskarshamn in 1970, world’s largest candle manufacturer, specialized in stearin candles.

the oldest person in sweden astrid zachrison born Åby in fliseryd, west of oskarshamn. died on 113th birthday.
