the cliffs 1 of ireland s top visitor attractions , 1 of best examples of cliff-nesting seabird colonies in ireland. area designated refuge fauna in 1988 , special protection area birds (spa) under eu birds directive in 1989. included within designated site cliffs, cliff-top maritime grassland , heath, , 200-metre zone of open water directly in front of cliffs protect part of birds feeding area. designation covers 200 hectares , highlights area s importance wildlife.

cill maccreiche (kilmacreehy church) first documented in 14th century, of current gothic ornamentation later.


liscannor castle

this o connor stronghold, dough castle later passed o briens. in 1712, earl of thomond let estate william fitzgerald (annual rent ₤14). under fitzgerald family, town began grow in later 18th century.


the ruined remains include six-story tower spiral stairway east , lower main building next it. latter described in detail thomas johnson westropp in late 19th century, noted had 5 floors.

located @ site of pre-christian lughnasadh celebrations, dabhach bhríde (or brigid s vat) found near cliffs of moher, , behind on higher level, steps lead, ancient cemetery. there large cross here , circular path around it, , part of rite of holy performed in area known ula uachtarach or upper sanctuary.


the well, dedicated brigid of kildare, in lower ground, ula íochtarach or lower sanctuary, enclosed in little house full of votive offerings such holy pictures, rosaries, medals , forth left pilgrims. small items people carry around them, such pens, biros , combs, commonly found offerings @ wells.


the has been subject of popular pilgrimage since @ least 1830s, when following personal cure attributed waters of well, cornelius o brien had house built.

the harbour built in 1825-31 £2,900, of £2,000 government grant. harbour has number of fishing vessels moored there smaller boats using launching site sea fishing/recreational sports. during summer months there ferry service base of cliffs of moher aran islands.


in past harbour hub numerous fishing vessels location export locally quarried liscannor stone , receive in supplies e.g. coal. historical documents note due silting of harbour, ships carry approximately 380 tonnes port. @ low tides ships had winched harbour. currach bring rope out ship. locally quarried flag cut , polished beside harbour , winched onto ships steam crane. these slabs transported various british cities (glasgow, manchester, etc.) use pavement slabs.


coal delivered directly liscannor until mid-1960s griffins coal yard in ennistymon. however, in mid-1960s boat ran aground outside harbour , sank. insurance became expensive, , coal delivered ennistymon via clarecastle.


others

the engineer john philip holland (1841–1914) born in liscannor, , developed of first submarines commissioned navy , royal navy. visitor centre, john p holland centre , opened in liscannor in 2016.


holland honoured memorial donated submarine veterans of navy.
