in 1969 hatfield college of technology became hatfield polytechnic, offering honours degree courses in technology. in 1970 observatory built on bayfordbury campus. wall hall , balls park teacher training colleges merged in 1976 become hertfordshire college of higher education. in same year hatfield polytechnic took on balls park. 1977 more ten per cent of 4000 came more forty different countries. students union social centre opened in 1977.


in 1982 john illston succeeded sir norman lindop director. sports hall built on hatfield campus in 1984 , number of students in year more 5000. number of staff, in same year, had increased 824.


neil buxton became director in 1987. following year, sir ron dearing , buxton signed agreement gave polytechnic accreditation council national academic awards. hatfield 1 of 21 polytechnics, colleges , scottish central institutions accredited @ time. hatfield also, in year, 1 of 8 polytechnics accredited research degrees. in 1989 given corporate status.


after john major announced in 1991 polytechnics abolished, hatfield polytechnic announced intention apply university status. in 1992 became university of hertfordshire , sir brian corby became first chancellor. first university run bus company making uno bus public. hertfordshire college of health care , nursing studies , barnet college of nursing , midwifery merged university in 1993.


in 1994 st albans cathedral chosen hold university s graduation ceremonies. same year saw first publication of league tables , hertfordshire named top new university. in 1995 law school moved st albans. sir ian maclaurin appointed chancellor in 1996 , in 1997 learning resource centre opened.
