army signal corps wright model a, army signal corps serial number 1, piloted orville wright, crashes @ fort myer, virginia, killing lt. thomas e. selfridge. during flight, had begun after 0700 hrs., propeller breaks , severs control wires. trials continued following year new smaller version of wright became first military aircraft when purchased army. aircraft served 2 years , retired on 4 may 1911. on display @ smithsonian institution national air , space museum, washington, d.c., after having been accepted exhibition on 20 october 1911. selfridge afb, michigan, later named first u.s. military aircrash victim. wright hospitalized until 31 october 1908 , spent several more weeks on crutches.

pilot samuel franklin cody takes off farnborough common, great britain, in british army aeroplane no 1, biplane powered 50 hp (37 kw) antoinette 8v engine. flight covers 424 metres before ending in crash-landing, survives.
