dts founded evangelical theological college in 1924 lewis sperry chafer, taught first class of 13 students, , william henry griffith thomas, have been school s first theology professor died before first classes began. vision school expository bible preaching taught simply, , under chafer s leadership, dts pioneered 1 of first four-year degrees in theology, master of theology (th.m.). present location of school purchased in 1926 , doctor of theology (th.d.) programs started in 1927. chafer remained president until death in 1952.


dts has continually published quarterly entitled bibliotheca sacra since 1934. in 1983, complete collection of bib sac articles published book commemorating fifty years of journal.


john f. walvoord, himself graduate, took on president in 1953 after chafer s death in 1952. in 1974, dts added two-year master of arts (ma) program in biblical studies, , in 1982, two-year program in christian education begun. in addition these, doctor of ministry (d.min.) program opened in 1980. walvoord retired dts president in 1986.


from 1986 1994, donald k. campbell served president of dts. during tenure, dts opened three-year ma program in biblical counseling , two-year ma program in biblical exegesis , linguistics.


dts graduate chuck swindoll president of school 1994 2001, , serves school s chancellor. since 2001, mark bailey has served president. under bailey s tenure, seminary added two-year ma program in media , communication, two-year ma in christian leadership, spanish d.min. program, , multi-lingual online education program.


as of spring 2014, dts has on 15,000 alumni serving in various ministerial capacities in 97 countries worldwide.
