after fitting out in boston , new york navy yards, nevada joined atlantic fleet in newport, rhode island on 26 may 1916. prior united states entry world war i, conducted many training cruises , underwent many exercises out of base in norfolk, virginia, sailing far south caribbean on these cruises. entered war in april 1917, nevada not sent other side of atlantic because of shortage of fuel oil in britain. instead, 4 coal-fired battleships of battleship division 9 (batdiv 9) (delaware, florida, wyoming, , new york) departed join british grand fleet on 25 november 1917. arrived on 7 december , designated 6th battle squadron of grand fleet. texas joined them after damage grounding on block island repaired; departed on 30 january , arrived in scotland on 11 february. not until 13 august 1918 nevada left britain, becoming last american ship join fleet overseas.
after 10-day voyage, arrived in berehaven, ireland, on 23 august. along utah , sister oklahoma, 3 nicknamed bantry bay squadron ; officially, batdiv 6 under command of rear admiral thomas s. rodgers, chose utah flagship. rest of war, 3 ships operated bay, escorting large , valuable convoys bound british isles ensure no german heavy surface ships slip past british grand fleet , annihilate merchant ships , weak escorts of older cruisers. never came pass, , war ended on 11 november nevada not getting chance engage enemy during war.

on 13 december 10 battleships, including nevada, , 28 destroyers escorted ocean liner george washington, president woodrow wilson embarked, brest, france, during last day of wilson s journey country attend paris peace conference. flotilla met george washington , escorts (pennsylvania , 4 destroyers) off brest , escorted them port. 10 battleships sailed home @ 14:00 on next day, 14 december. took less 2 weeks cross atlantic, , arrived in new york on 26 december parades , celebrations.
