in august 1853, daniel harmon brush, john asgill conner, , dr. william richart bought 360-acre (1.5 km) parcel of land between 2 proposed railroad station sites (makanda , de soto) , 2 county seats (murphysboro , marion). brush named carbondale large deposit of coal in area. first train through carbondale arrived on independence day 1854, traveling north on main line cairo, illinois.


by time of american civil war, carbondale had developed regional center transportation , business, surrounded agricultural development. part of illinois known little egypt because of confluence of ohio , mississippi rivers, town of cairo located.


the city has had college since 1856 beginning presbyterian founded carbondale college later converted elementary school. carbondale won bid new state teacher training school region, , southern illinois normal university opened in 1874. gave town new industry, new citizens, , supplement public schools. in 1947, name changed southern illinois university. has become flagship of southern illinois university system. institution, recognized national research university, has 18,000 students enrolled (as of 2014) , offers wide variety of undergraduate , graduate specialties.


on april 29, 1866, 1 of first formal memorial day observations following civil war held @ city s woodlawn cemetery. local resident, general john a. logan, gave principal address.


in 20th century, carbondale known athens of egypt, due expansion of college , university, , region s moniker of little egypt. phrase dates @ least 1903, when appeared in local paper. 1922, carbondale free press using phrase on flag.
