utrecht city has active cultural life, , in netherlands second amsterdam. there several theatres , theatre companies. 1941 main city theatre built dudok. besides theatres there large number of cinemas including 3 arthouse cinemas. utrecht host international music festival (festival oude muziek, music before 1800) , netherlands film festival. city has important classical music hall vredenburg (1979 herman hertzberger). acoustics considered among best of 20th-century original music halls. original vredenburg music hall has been redeveloped part of larger station area redevelopment plan , in 2014 has gained additional halls allowed merger rock club tivoli , sju jazzpodium. there several other venues music throughout city. young musicians educated in conservatory, department of utrecht school of arts. there specialised museum of automatically playing musical instruments.

there many art galleries in utrecht. there several foundations support art , artists. training of artists done @ utrecht school of arts. centraal museum has many exhibitions on arts, including permanent exhibition on works of utrecht resident illustrator dick bruna, best known creating miffy ( nijntje , in dutch). although street art illegal in utrecht, utrechtse kabouter, picture of gnome red hat, became common sight in 2004. utrecht houses 1 of landmarks of modern architecture, 1924 rietveld schröder house, listed on unesco s world heritage sites.

every saturday paviour adds letter letters of utrecht, endless poem in cobblestones of oude gracht in utrecht. letters, utrecht has social sculpture growing monument created benefit of future people.

to promote culture utrecht city organizes cultural sundays. during thematic sunday several organisations create program, open without, or reduced, admission fee. there initiatives amateur artists. city subsidises organisation amateur education in arts aimed @ inhabitants (utrechts centrum voor de kunsten), university staff , students. additionally there several private initiatives. city council provides coupons discounts inhabitants receive welfare used many of initiatives.

in july 2013, utrecht hosted european youth olympic festival, in more 2,000 young athletes competed in 9 different olympic sports. in july 2015 utrecht hosted grand départ , first stage of tour de france.
