early career (1997–2009)
rivera made wrestling debut in 1997, using ring name rocky romero. trained antonio inoki @ njpw dojo in los angeles. career has taken him through promotions in southern california region mexico, competed consejo mundial de lucha libre (cmll), world s oldest wrestling promotion, , in japan has worked notably in new japan pro wrestling, (njpw) chosen become fourth incarnation of black tiger, villainous gaijin opponent of tiger mask (in case tiger mask iv). on october 8, 2005, romero, black tiger, defeated tiger mask iwgp junior heavyweight championship. after four-month reign, tiger mask regained title nemesis. romero made debut in pro wrestling noah on march 4, 2007, versus mushiking terry, casting doubt future of black tiger persona. romero, however, did compete black tiger in august 2007 in chikara compete nwa world junior heavyweight championship against champion mike quackenbush. @ njpw s resolution 09 on april 5, romero lost in mask vs. title match against tiger mask, ending role black tiger.
mexico (2003–2004, 2008–2010)
in late 2003, romero began working consejo mundial de lucha libre, using name havana brother i, team havana brother ii , havana brother iii form three-man team known los havana brothers. few months later los havana brothers began working rocky romero, pinoy boy , bobby quance respectively. on september 12, romero became cmll s first-ever world super lightweight champion after defeating volador jr. in tournament final. on november 14, virus defeated romero win championship, signaling exit of los havana brothers time being. in late 2004 romero made surprise return cmll , defeated virus regain championship. after title win left cmll again, defending championship in southern california. in 2005, local wrestler tommy williams won super lightweight championship romero regained in january 2006. @ point championship became inactive, no mention of it.
in 2008, romero returned cmll , began working under name grey shadow , masked gimmick, without cmll opening acknowledging romero under mask. no official references given past cmll, nor mention of fact romero cmll world super lightweight champion. on october 5, 2008, romero jumped cmll rival promotion lucha libre aaa world wide (aaa). made surprise debut @ promotion s television taping in puebla, puebla , announced member of sean waltman s d-generation mex stable @ show. on july 4, 2010, romero turned rudo , joined la legión extranjera instead. however, 4 days later reported romero had left aaa, after company had asked him take pay cut.

romero s main exposure in united states came while one-half of havana pitbulls tag team, partner ricky reyes, in ring of honor , reyes set record longest reign roh tag team champions @ 196 days, record held until 2005 when eclipsed team of austin aries , roderick strong. while in roh, , reyes members of homicide s stable, rottweilers. left company @ end of 2005 focus on working in japan.
he returned on january 26, 2007 defeating davey richards. following evening, romero walked out on longtime partner reyes in midst of match against briscoe brothers. on march 31, romero introduced newest member of no remorse corps. romero , new stablemate davey richards lost jack evans , naruki doi. rocky romero has been touring noah , teaming atsushi aoki in ntv jr heavyweight cup. made debut antonio inoki s new promotion inoki genome federation defeating el blazer. on january 26, 2008, romero teamed davey richards , defeated teams of age of fall (tyler black , jimmy jacobs), austin aries , bryan danielson, , brent albright , b.j. whitmer in ultimate endurance match capture world tag team championship. romero , richards later lost titles briscoe brothers, , romero later left roh in mid-2008 once again compete in mexico. returned @ final battle 2009, won match against rival alex koslov. had rematch on march 26, 2010, in arizona during wrestlemania weekend, koslov won.

on october 12, 2010, new japan pro wrestling announced romero return promotion in november, teaming davey richards in super j tag league, member of promotion s top heel stable, shinsuke nakamura s chaos. five-day-long tournament ended on november 13, romero , richards winning block , advancing finals, defeated chaos team mates jado , gedo. on may 3, 2011, romero , richards unsuccessfully challenged prince devitt , ryusuke taguchi iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship.
on october 10, 2011, @ destruction 11, romero , richards defeated devitt , taguchi in rematch win iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship first time. romero , richards made first successful title defense on november 12 @ power struggle, defeating team of kushida , tiger mask. on december 23, romero unsuccessfully challenged prince devitt iwgp junior heavyweight championship. on january 4, 2012, @ wrestle kingdom vi in tokyo dome, romero , richards lost iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship devitt , taguchi. no remorse corps regained title apollo 55 on february 12 @ new beginning. on may 2, romero , richards stripped of iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship, after travel issues forced richards miss following day s wrestling dontaku 2012 event, 2 scheduled defend title against jushin thunder liger , tiger mask.

romero reunited former aaa partner alex koslov. on july 22, team, dubbed forever hooligans , defeated liger , tiger mask win iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship. romero , koslov made first successful title defense on august 26 @ sacramento wrestling federation (swf) event in gridley, california, defeating team of a.j. kirsch , alex shelley. forever hooligans made second successful title defense on october 8 @ king of pro-wrestling, defeating time splitters (alex shelley , kushida). on october 21, forever hooligans entered 2012 super jr. tag tournament, defeating jushin thunder liger , tiger mask in first round match. on november 2, romero , koslov eliminated tournament in semifinals apollo 55. on november 11 @ power struggle, forever hooligans lost iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship winners of super jr. tag tournament, time splitters, ending reign @ 112 days. on may 3, 2013, @ wrestling dontaku 2013, romero , koslov regained title time splitters. lost title suzuki-gun (taichi , taka michinoku) on october 14 @ king of pro-wrestling.
on july 27, 2013, romero , koslov, returned roh, through njpw s close working relationship, , defeated redragon (bobby fish , kyle o reilly) become new roh world tag team champions. lost title american wolves (davey richards , eddie edwards) in first defense on august 3. on september 20 @ death before dishonor xi, forever hooligans defeated american wolves in rematch retain iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship.
for first half of 2014, forever hooligans received several new shots @ njpw junior heavyweight tag team championship, held young bucks (matt , nick jackson), defeated each time, including in three-way match, involving time splitters, on may 10 @ global wars, special event co-produced njpw , roh in toronto. forever hooligans broke in january 2015, when koslov announced taking indefinite break professional wrestling. on march 1, romero revealed , trent baretta forming new tag team named roppongi vice. on april 5 @ invasion attack 2015, team captured iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship young bucks. lost title young bucks on may 3 @ wrestling dontaku 2015.

in 2016, reported wwe interested in signing romero both trainer , wrestler. however, on january 9, romero announced had instead signed new two-year deal njpw. on march 14, 2016 @ roh television taping, roppongi vice won 7 tag team gauntlet match determine #1 contenders roh world tag team championships defeating young bucks after entering match seventh team. on april 10 @ invasion attack 2016, roppongi vice defeated matt sydal , ricochet win iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship second time. lost title sydal , ricochet on may 3 @ wrestling dontaku 2016. on november 5 @ power struggle, roppongi vice defeated ach , taiji ishimori in finals win 2016 super jr. tag tournament. on january 4, 2017, @ wrestle kingdom 11 in tokyo dome, roppongi vice defeated young bucks win iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship third time together. individually, romero set new record winning title seventh time. lost title suzuki-gun (taichi , yoshinobu kanemaru) @ njpw s 45th anniversary show on march 6, before regaining on april 27. lost title young bucks on june 11 @ dominion 6.11 in osaka-jo hall. on july 2 @ g1 special in usa, roppongi vice unsuccessfully challenged young bucks title in rematch. afterwards, romero brought five-year plan , beretta had made 3 years earlier, included them winning iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship , super jr. tag tournament, both of had done, beretta s eventual transition heavyweight division. having failed regain iwgp junior heavyweight tag team championship, romero gave beretta blessing move heavyweight division, disbanding roppongi vice. roppongi vice s farewell match took place on september 16 @ destruction in hiroshima, defeated bullet club s chase owens , yujiro takahashi.
later same day, romero announced transitioning role of manager , bringing in new tag team named roppongi 3k take on iwgp junior heavyweight tag team champions ricochet , ryusuke taguchi. on october 9 @ king of pro-wrestling, romero revealed new team sho , yoh, defeated ricochet , taguchi become new iwgp junior heavyweight tag team champions.
