she armour-clad monitor built messrs. laird brothers, of birkenhead, in 1866...... 190 ft. in length between perpendiculars, 35 ft. in extreme breadth, , 19 ft. 9 in. in depth of hold. builder s tonnage 1101, , indicated horse power 1500. draught of water 15 ft. 6 in., , maximum speed said 12 knots when boilers in condition, , bottom clean. usual speed under working conditions not more 10 1/2 11 knots. propelled single screw. huascar rigged two-masted vessel, foremast being upon captain cole s tripod principle. freeboard, or height of deck above water, 5 ft. carries 2 300-pounder armstrong guns in 1 turret, protected 5 1/2-in. armour plating upon teak backing of 14 in. sides protected armour plating 4 1/2 in. thick amidships, tapering 2 1/2 in. @ extremities, worked upon teak backing of 14 in. there armoured pilot tower of hexagonal form abaft turret ship worked in action; , openings in deck protected 2-in. iron plates shipped in openings skylights or hatchways. huascar iron-built vessel, , @ time built perfect in appliances of defence, , in internal arrangements.
