the west end line has had express (on bmt fourth avenue line) service – labeled 3 in 1924 – since opened in 1916, passing on manhattan bridge , onto bmt broadway line express tracks. in late 1950s, midday trains switched local fourth avenue tracks , through montague street tunnel, , late night , sunday service became shuttle between coney island , 36th street. express , local services assigned designations t , tt in 1960s. opening of chrystie street connection in late 1967, b train manhattan , bronx extended coney island, absorbing t , tt (both ran express on fourth avenue). tt late night , sunday shuttle survived until 1968, when b became full-time. ran local on fourth avenue during late night hours, express @ other times. late night operation cut shuttle 36th street in 1976.

in 2001, when reconstruction of manhattan bridge north tracks, b service in brooklyn replaced new w train, ran shuttle not 36th street during nighttime hours, atlantic avenue–pacific street on weekends. in 2002, reconstruction of coney island–stillwell avenue resulted in west end line being line serve terminal , w extended full-time manhattan, using local fourth avenue tracks , montague street tunnel on weekends , late nights hours.

in 2004, manhattan bridge reconstruction completed, , w replaced extended d train, running on bridge @ hours , express on fourth avenue except late nights. restored brooklyn d service moved west end line instead of returning brighton line on had run since 1967, except periods of construction rerouting, in order avoid running 2 separate (b , d) shortened lines outside of weekday hours. plan b run on weekdays in bronx, while restored service on brighton line (formerly d) run on weekdays in brooklyn. thus, moving b brighton line meant need operated during weekday hours. eliminated need run late-night and/or weekend shuttles on either concourse line or west end line.

the other service pattern west end short line , rush-hour local (on fourth avenue) service between bmt nassau street line in lower manhattan , 62nd street or bay parkway. became part of tt in 1960s , discontinued in 1967. in 1987, short line service recreated when rush-hour m extension brooklyn moved bmt brighton line west end line terminating @ bay parkway. terminated @ ninth avenue until 1995, when cut chambers street. extended again 2001–2004 while manhattan bridge closed reconstruction. in 2010, part of series of mta budget cuts, rush-hour m service discontinued.
