in 20th century, santiago ramón y cajal , camillo golgi began working on structure of neuron. golgi developed silver staining method entirely stain several cells in particular area, leading him believe neurons directly connected each other in 1 cytoplasm. cajal challenged view after staining areas of brain had less myelin , discovering neurons discrete cells. cajal discovered cells transmit electrical signals down neuron in 1 direction only. both golgi , cajal awarded nobel prize in physiology or medicine in 1906 work on neuron doctrine.
