capt. patrick hamilton , lt. wyness-stuart of royal flying corps killed when deperdussin monoplane breaks in flight, crashing @ graveley, near welwyn. 60 hp (45 kw) anzani-powered aircraft had been taken on strength army in january 1912.


10 september
lts. e. hotchkiss , c. a. bettington killed when bristol-coanda monoplane suffers structural failure , crashes. second accident involving royal flying corps monoplane in 5 days causes col. seely, secretary of state war, issue ban on monoplanes on 14 september. ban reversed 5 months later when technical studies show monoplanes no more dangerous biplanes.


28 september
wright model b, u.s. army signal corps serial number 4, crashes @ college park airport, maryland, killing 2 crew, lieutenant l. c. rockwell , corporal frank s. scott. on 20 july 1917, signal corps aviation school named rockwell field in honor of 2nd lt. lewis c. rockwell, killed in crash, , scott field, illinois named first enlisted personnel killed in aviation crash. scott air force base remains u.s. air force base named enlisted man.
