the stadium first hosted football game (as in soccer) on 30 september 1990 when shamrock rovers used home ground. next 6 seasons until april 1996 rovers played home games there. stadium held first international match on 19 february 1992 when played host home game between ireland , wales national football team. stadium hosted games of 1994 uefa european under-16 football championships including third-place playoff , final. final of fai cup held @ rds in 2007 , 2008 during construction of aviva stadium. 2009 final, however, moved tallaght stadium. rds hosted game between st patrick s athletic , hertha berlin in 2008–09 uefa cup first round. st patrick s athletic played steaua bucureşti in arena on 27 august 2009 in europa league. rds arena hosted ireland team when played paraguay , algeria in may 2010.

the arena constructed host show-jumping events, dublin horse show has been held rds annually since 1864. in 1881 show moved ‘ball s bridge , greenfield site. first continuous ‘leaping course introduced @ show. in same year first viewing stand erected on site of present grand stand. held 800 people.
in 1925 colonel zeigler of swiss army first suggested holding international jumping event. aga khan of time heard of proposal , offered challenge trophy winner of competition. in 1926 international competitions introduced show , first time nations cup aga khan challenge trophy held. until 1949 nations cup teams had consist of military officers. 6 countries competed in first international teams competition aga khan challenge trophy - great britain, netherlands, belgium, france, switzerland , ireland. swiss team won title on irish bred horses.
in 1976, after 50 years of international competition, 2 grass banks in arena removed arena used other events. continental bank @ western end of main arena added later.
the rds hosted show jumping world championships in 1982.

rds arena, home of leinster rugby
the stadium first opened doors rugby union on saturday 15 october 2005, hosting game between leinster rugby , cardiff blues, leinster won 34 – 15, arena hosted 4 further games season. following season, rds not used leinster due redevelopment.
the 2007–08 season saw rds become official home of leinster when branch signed 20-year lease on ground, of home games season hosted there. change came after became apparent team s former home of donnybrook stadium no longer had sufficient capacity. after renovation , expansion, grandstand , north , south stands expanded, boosting capacity 18,500 along floodlights being installed , new playing surface being laid, withstand demands of full rugby season , show jumping events.
the rds had proven successful hunting ground leinster, won 11 of 12 home games season, culminating on saturday 3 may 2008 in 41 – 8 victory on newport gwent dragons , lifting celtic league trophy day. in all, leinster had played 18 games in rds, losing twice, bath , scarlets.
between march 2008 , 2010, final of leinster schools senior cup played in rds due redevelopment of lansdowne road, traditional venue.
the rds hosted autumn rugby international between ireland , fiji on 21 november 2009. ireland convincing winners on day.
the stadium hosted 2010, 2012, 2013 , 2014 pro12 grand finals , 2013 challenge cup final between leinster , stade français, saw sell-out crowd of 20,396 people.
