the chemung county historical society located @ 415 east water street in elmira, new york in former chemung canal bank building. society operates 2 facilities in building: chemung valley history museum, located on first floor, , booth library , archival repository, located on second floor. 1834 until 1920, current museum building served chemung canal bank headquarters , various offices, notably sayles-evans law office. building listed on national register of historic places. had 2 , half stories, , third story added in 1868. building brick structure stepped gables, notable, of buildings @ time in elmira made of wood. bank expressed greek revival idiom transitional federal-style elements. entrance building stone stoop steps adorned ornamental wrought iron railing. building remodeled in 1903 architectural firm pierce , bickford when chemung canal bank merged elmira trust company. in december 1920, chemung canal trust company moved new facility , bank building came under ownership of arnot realty company.
