jenisch joined navy, named reichsmarine, in 1933, , after serving in cruiser deutschland transferred u-boat arm in 1937. served 1wo (second-in-command) of u-32 under werner lott, before taking command of u-boat in february 1940.

on 26 october 1940, empress of britain spotted german focke-wulf c 200 condor long-range bomber, commanded oberleutnant bernhard jope. jope s bomber strafed empress of britain 3 times , hit twice 250 kilograms (550 lb) bombs causing severe damage ship. jenisch had been informed of location of damaged vessel , intercepted on evening of 27 october. jenisch fired 3 torpedoes, hitting twice. empress of britain sank @ 02:05 on 28 october 1940. @ 42,348 gross tons, largest ship sunk german u-boat.
capture
jenisch captured on 30 october 1940 after u-32 sunk north-west of ireland british destroyers harvester , highlander. 9 of crew died, 33 survived taken prisoner, including jenisch. spent next 6.5 years in british captivity before return germany in june 1947.
post-war
even though jenisch became known celebrated u-boat commander, subsequent assessment of submarines highly negative. in pow camp, told shocked wilfried prellberg (ex-co of u-31) considered submarines in warfare obsolete. of it. on joining west german bundesmarine in 1956, jenisch held staff positions , commanded training frigate hipper (originally black swan-class sloop, ex-hms actaeon) time.
