gentleman paints , draws landscapes, buildings , people, , uses drawing in design work. many of watercolours have been made in london , suffolk , around britain, on extended travels in france, italy , india, , during briefer spells in south carolina, east africa, pacific , brazil. has held many exhibitions of these works. commissioned series of watercolours have included landscapes shell, several oxford almanacks oxford university press, , interiors of foreign , commonwealth office fco. drawings , watercolours have been reproduced on textiles , wallpapers, dinner plates wedgwood , on covent garden mug david mellor. architectural drawings have appeared in house & garden, sunday times, new york magazine, , on riba’s series of everyday architecture wallcharts. published watercolours made illustrations in country, 2014. in 2010, gentleman commissioned dulwich picture gallery create design christmas card.

gentleman’s wood engravings penguin paperbacks, greetings cards, wine lists, press ads, , books – swiss family robinson , john clare s shepherd s calendar. engraved series of 32 covers new penguin shakespeare series. wood engravings appear on many of stamps, , in 100-metre-long mural, seen public work. in 1978, london transport commissioned platform-length eleanor cross murals on underground @ charing cross station. shows, in strip cartoon, how medieval workforce built original cross, quarrying stone setting in place topmost pinnacle. wood-engraved images of stonemasons , sculptors, enlarged twenty times life-size, mirror today’s passengers going day s work.

gentleman has illustrated many books other people, including drawings cookbook plats du jour. in 2009 painted watercolours illustrate ask fellows cut hay george ewart evans. limited editions club of new york illustrated swiss family robinson, keats s poems, jungle book, , ballad of robin hood, , several books children, including russell hoban’s dancing tigers. has designed many paperback covers , jackets: penguin books, e. m. forster’s novels , new penguin shakespeare wood engravings; faber, many watercolours siegfried sassoon , lawrence durrell novels; , duckworth, wood engraved or typographical designs scientific , classical works.

between 1962 , 2000 gentleman designed 103 stamps post office, making him prolific stamp designer in britain @ time. these include sets shakespeare, churchill, darwin, british ships, concorde, battle of britain, battle of hastings, bbc, king wenceslas, twelve days of christmas, social reformers, ely cathedral, abbotsbury swannery , millennium.

his stamp designs included album of experimental designs commissioned tony benn, postmaster general show how stamps dispense large photograph of queen mandatory, or alternatively replace smaller profile silhouette derived mary gillick’s coinage head. on forty years later, wider range of subjects, profile , simpler designs made possible remain feature of british special stamps.

he won phillips gold medal postage stamp design in both 1969 , 1979.

the royal mint have issued 2 of gentleman s coin designs. first (issued jointly monnaie de paris in 2004) celebrated centenary of entente cordiale, , second in 2007 commemorated bicentenary of act abolition of slave trade. other miniature design commissions have included symbols or logos bodleian library, british steel , redesign of national trust’s familiar symbol of spray of oak leaves.

gentleman has designed posters public institutions including london transport (visitors’ london , victorian london), imperial war museum, , public record office. series in seventies national trust, used unconventional designs, photographs , photo-montages; won design awards. later, poster-like designs replaced words in book special relationship (faber, 1979) on us/uk alliance. gentleman regretted these images not displayed actual posters. on eve of iraq war in 2003, gentleman offered stop war coalition poster saying no , carried on protest march. other march placards followed, including no more lies , bliar . largest design installation in 2007 of 100,000 drops of blood, 1 each person killed in war. bloodstains printed on 1,000 sheets of card pegged out in vast square covering grass in parliament square.

gentleman s first lithographs posters royal college of art theatre group production of orphee , student exhibition, , 1 of first commissions large lyons lithograph. between 1970 , 2008 made suites of lithographs of buildings (covent garden, south carolina, bath) , landscapes (of gordale scar, of 7 sisters, , of suffolk subjects). these lithographs printed in colour , representational. in 1970 made 6 more poster-like screenprints, fortifications, published in new york. number of these in collections of tate britain.
