mosques

sidi arif mosque (arabic: مسجد العارف بالله, masjid al-ʿarif bi-allah). mosque located in south of city. el-ʿarif mosque built in 14th century (the 8th century of islamic calendar). present building constructed around 1995. @ corners of façade 2 minarets, , roof crowned dome. inside five-naves mosque bases of piers , walls lined red granite. ceiling painted ornamentally; in middle elongated light dome. southeasten half lit chandeliers. @ end there prayer niche (mihrab) simple ornaments , right of wooden pulpit (minbar).



el-farshuti mosque (arabic: جامع الفرشوطي, jāmʿi al-farschūṭī). el-fashuti mosque named el- atiq mosque (the old mosque) located approximately 350 metres (1,150 feet) southwest of sidi arif mosque . striking feature of mosque 53-metre-high (174-foot) minaret in southeast corner. minaret has galleries balustrades on 4 floors. mosque modern, bright new building. mosque divided 5 naves columns , pillars. has light dome in middle inscribed @ bottom sura qur an. bases of walls painted yellow , white green bands. colorful prayer niche next wooden pulpit located @ southeast side.

in masonry on east, south , west sides stones engraved historic inscriptions moved previous buildings, including decree of penultimate mamluk sultan al-ghawri (1441–1516) year 1506 (911 ah) on southeast side.

in city there 2 important churches erected in 20th century: church of holy virgin , church of saint george.



the church of holy virgin (arabic: كنيسة السيدة العذراء, kanīsat as-saiyida al-ʿadraʾ). church located in north of bazaar (souq qaiṣarīya). consists of 5 naves. there 3 sanctuaries saint george (left), holy virgin , archangel michael @ ends of middle 3 naves. sanctuaries screened wooden iconostasis. on both sides of entrances sanctuaries wooden icons of holy virgin , jesus (see iconostasis). lord s last supper , crosses located above iconstasis. presentation in central nave framed fish , pigeon, other ones framed angels , dove. galleries located above aisles , entrance. on walls, there paintings of saints , scenes life of jesus.



church of st. george cathedral of diocese of sohag (arabic: كنيسة مار جرجس, kanīsat mar girgis). church located 300 metres (980 feet) north of opera (midan obira) or culture square (midan eth-thaqafa).
church of archangel michael (arabic: كنيسة الملاك ميخائيل). church located in railway station street (el-mahatta st.), on east side of railway tracks.

white monastery


the coptic white monastery coptic orthodox monastery named after saint shenouda archimandrite. located 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) west of sohag. name of monastery derived color of white limestone of outside walls. surviving building church of once larger monastery complex.



red monastery


the red monastery coptic orthodox monastery named after egyptian saint called pishay. located 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) north of white monastery. name of monastery derived color of construction material of outside walls, consisting of red (burnt) brick. these walls considerably thicker @ base @ top, , walls of ancient egyptian temples, surmounted cavetto moldings. red monastery architecturally similar white monastery.



temples , cemeteries

the city site of temple built goddess repyt (triphis) ptolemy xv caesarion , subsequent roman emperors. south of temple earlier temple of ptolemy ix soter ii. 1 of tombs nearby, belonging brothers ibpemeny younger , pemehyt of late second century bc, has 2 zodiacs on ceiling.
