the second series began broadcasting on 2 june 2003 on bbc 1 during 9 10 pm timeslot, , continued on every monday night until 11 august 2003, although there week break in schedule midway through series due overrun of wimbledon tennis match on 30 june. second through ninth episode pre-empted bbc 3 week before repeated on bbc one. in us, second series aired on a&e, though each episode had approximately fifteen minutes edited out accommodate advert breaks. dvd release of series in america contained uncut episodes. later repeated on bbc america, alongside first series july 2007.


the second series began overnight viewing figures of 7.8 million. second episode lowered 7.6 million viewers, third of television audience, while third episode dropped 6.9 million viewers, , fourth rose 7.2 million, winning timeslot against repeats of itv1 s darling buds of may. following week interruption wimbledon, fifth episode slipped 6.1 million, , spooks lowered still 6 million sixth episode, before seventh episode rose 6.6 million. overnight ratings rose 7 million second series finale. consolidated figures factored in, second series seen per-episode average of 7.19 million viewers.


critical reception

the second series received favourable reviews. gord lacey of tvshowsondvd called second series such fun series , plausible spy show , great show, [...] solid bbc release. dennis landmann of moviefreak stated season rules tells complex, dangerous, , relevant stories creates high octane, powerful drama , , producers create top notch work, excellent cinematography great-looking sets , locations, , researched , sweet scripts solid acting principal actors. landmann noticed main focus towards tom throughout series builds until becomes of haunted soul final minutes being powerful affected how felt next couple of days; kept thinking character , tragic events happened him . reviewer summed stating second season improves on first , rated 9 out of ten.



anyone has seen first season of [spooks] figured out fast show has absolutely no problem doing unexpected, or doing terrible, terrible, oh-god-so-terrible things main characters. if have seen it, know mean. there nothing worse cynical disbelief of action/drama show know main characters going escape without harm, because hey, re guys, , have come , make new season. absolutely nothing in [spooks] clear-cut. keeps on toes.




michael mackenzie of digital fix commented chain events leading chaotic final episode extremely set , though opined macfadyen had been weakest actor in ensemble . felt there instances stories go , including zoe , carlo storyline. however, mackenzie felt strongest series out of first three, saying remains of best television produced on blighted isle in years , rated 8 out of ten. adam arseneau of dvd verdict compared series 24 , wire. arseneau stated clicks on every level required: great acting performances, fantastic story lines, well-written dialogue, gritty authenticity, , importantly, unpredictability, summing series sleek, stylish, tense, , compelling—some of best television have had pleasure watch .


not reviews positive. holly e ordway of dvd talk disliked series, stating d heard gripping, intelligent series told great spy-thriller stories gritty realism [...] well, seems [spooks] , not meant together; bounced off show on first episode , never succeeded afterwards in bringing myself better. ordway further felt poorly acted , rapid cuts , frantic editing doesn t work make more entertaining, , attempts complexity painful .


muslim controversy

the second series attracted controversy second episode, depicted islamic extremism @ mosque base of operations. episode attracted around 800 complaints following original bbc 3 broadcast, many appealing not repeat on bbc one. repeated, , attracted further 150 complaints. broadcasting standards commission dismissed of complaints episode presented drama , not factual account. after episode aired, muslim student in birmingham assaulted, , birmingham central mosque vandalised, allegedly result of show. bbc denied episode had influence on incidents however, , west midlands police ruled there no evidence linking attacks programme.


the episode received negative reactions key members of many muslim organisations across country. inayat bunglawala of muslim council of britain stated programme, of sensational nature, unfortunately serves reinforce many negative stereotypes of british muslims. instead of being well-informed piece of film-making, episode of spooks pandered grossly offensive , islamophobic caricatures of imams, muslim students , mosques. ahtsham ali of islamic society of britain claimed episode adds fuel fire of negative perceptions of muslims , fans flames of british national party rhetoric. muslim parliament of great britain s dr ghayasuddin siddiqui said sad bbc doing this, [...] trying condemn kind of involvement in our community...to keep on making responsible these crimes manipulation.


the producers , bbc responded controversy citing muslim involvement towards research , making of episode, including muslim sources, , depicting muslim characters stood against terrorists. producers stated episode not meant offend anybody, , did not imply muslims terrorists, fanatics can give millions of people bad name.


accolades , viewer polls

the second series nominated 2 awards, winning 1 of them. paul knight , barney pilling nominated british academy television (bafta) craft award editing in fiction/entertainment, lost out mark day work on 2003 serial state of play. won royal television society award best drama series, beating @ home braithwaites , teachers.


the second series received viewers. bbc released best of viewer polls @ end of 2003 on website. spooks voted best drama year. however, voted tenth in worst drama category. series voted first best drama website . macfadyen awarded fourth in best actor category, while hawes voted second best actress, beaten julie walters roles in canterbury tales, in hawes starred in, , return. macfadyen , hawes listed in desirable star category, having voted seventh , third, respectively. tessa phillips voted 13th best villain . second series cliffhanger public s second favourite moment in television, beaten surprise return of dirty den watts soap opera eastenders.
