during fourth flight, british airship r38 (zr-2), due delivered united states navy zr-2, broke in 2 on test flight near hull, england, forward half falling humber river whereupon spilt gasoline on water caught fire, while stern, not in flames, settled on sandbar. ship had been undergoing turning trials, @ 63 mph @ 2,500 feet, rudders worked maximum, causing lightweight structure fail. 44 died, including british air commodore e.m. maitland, leader of airships, , 16 americans. maxfield field @ nas lakehurst, new jersey, named 6 january 1944 in honor of commander louis h. maxfield, naval aviator no. 17, lost life in r38 crash.


31 august
u.s. navy airship d-6, a5972, c-type envelope built goodyear in 1920 , special enclosed car built naval aircraft factory, destroyed in naval air station rockaway hangar gasoline fire along 2 small dirigibles, c-10 , goodyear airship h-1, a5973, sole h-model, powered two-seat observation balloon built along lines of commercial goodyear pony blimp , , kite balloon a-p.


29 september
first orenco d manufactured curtiss, 63281, mccook project number p163 , loses entire leading edge of upper wing, crashing @ mccook field, ohio. investigation officer of flying test section of usaas engineering division reveals orenco ds badly constructed, no fewer 30 defects , faulty fittings being recorded in published report, forcing air service withdraw orenco ds use (joe baugher cites date of 28 september).


28 december
second lieutenant samuel howard davis (1896–1921) killed in crash of curtiss jn-6hg-1 (possibly usaas serial 44796, seen wrecked @ carlstrom aaf, date unknown) in passenger, @ carlstrom field, arcadia, florida. davis-monthan landing field, later davis-monthan air force base, tucson, arizona, named in part him, 1 november 1925. attended high school in community.
