biography
early life

macvane born on state street in portland, maine, parents, dr. william l. macvane sr. , bertha may achorn. attended hebron academy, college preparatory school in hebron, maine. macvane s interest in medicine began in teens, when underwent mastoidectomy. doctors asked macvane accompany them on rounds during recovery.


macvane went on earn bachelor s degree williams college in massachusetts , medical degree johns hopkins school of medicine in baltimore.


surgical career

following medical school, intern , assistant resident in surgery @ union memorial hospital, baltimore. during world war ii, dr. macvane served army officer in 61st portable surgical unit. stationed in philippines , japan during , after war. macvane recipient of bronze star performing major surgery under adverse conditions.


after world war ii, macvane honorably discharged army in 1946 major. returned maine, becoming first surgical resident @ maine general hospital in portland. additionally, macvane became attending surgeon @ other hospitals in maine, including portland city hospital, maine medical center, mercy hospital , togus v.a. hospital. briefly left maine 2 years in 1950s. worked both thoracic surgery resident @ v.a. hospital in oteen, north carolina, , thoracic surgery fellow @ george washington university hospital in washington, d.c., 1953 until 1955.


he once again returned maine in 1955, practiced thoracic , general surgery. assisted dr. emerson drake in maine s first open heart surgery, performed @ maine medical center in 1959. continued work thoracic surgeon , consultant in hospitals throughout state. macvane served on executive committee of mercy hospital eighteen years.


macvane worked joint commission on accreditation of hospitals ten years after retiring surgical career. surveyed , accredited hospitals throughout united states, middle east , europe.


political career

macvane elected portland, maine city council in 1967 representing city s west end neighborhood. took office in 1968 , held office until 1977. macvane served largely ceremonial mayor of portland 1 term, 1970 1971.


he elected portland school board , served member of portland transit authority.


philanthropy

macvane served on boards of directors numerous organizations, including portland chapter of american red cross , portland ymca. headed or chaired committees portland bicentennial committee, portland public library , reiche school.


later life

macvane remained active throughout life. won new england seniors badminton doubles , singles championships in 1990. continued attend classes @ university of southern maine s osher lifelong learning institute 90s. during life, macvane member of many portland area organizations , societies, including portland rotary club, masons, western maine torch club, cumberland club, sigma phi society , portland yacht club.


macvane died on august 1, 2010, @ age of 95. survived 3 children 60-year marriage wife, margaret macvane: 2 daughters, lesley macvane , margaret murray , son, captain forbes macvane of u.s. navy. survived 2 children first marriage, william harris , patricia macvane.


macvane oldest living mayor of portland @ time of death in 2010.
