historically, iceland divided farthings named after cardinal directions. these administrative divisions established in 965 purpose of organising regional assemblies called farthing assemblies , regional courts called quarter courts. each farthing contained 3 local assemblies (held in spring , autumn) except norðlendingafjórðungur had four.
