representative matches

the inaugural club competition in new south wales began in sydney on april 21 , club matches ran in parallel representative matches through may, june , july. first lot of representative matches played against returning new zealand team in newcastle , sydney.

three queensland footballers, doug mclean, micky dore , robert tubman played australia against new zealand in sydney on may 9. 3 queenslanders unavailable selection due work commitments.


the touring new zealanders arrived in brisbane on friday, may 15, , after reception @ hotel, went have @ venue matches. there, “the members of team trained on exhibition ground, , coached of queensland team in points of northern rugby union game.”


the first formal rugby league match in queensland played on may 16 between queensland , new zealand teams. queensland had honour of scoring first points, through try in corner arthur o brien. new zealand responded 2 quick tries. further 2 tries visitors, , goal kicks unsuccessful, half-time score new zealand 12, queensland 3. after conceding try doug mclean in second half, new zealand took score 34, before rally queensland saw tries bill hardcastle , george watson. @ full-time, new zealand 34 had defeated queensland 12.


the following days , weeks saw new zealand team undergo emotional trial due passing of 1 of leading members, albert baskerville. having caught chill on ship voyage sydney, baskerville entered hospital on sunday, “suffering pneumonia”. died on wednesday evening, may 20, aged 25. baskerville had been 1 of small group organised tour, acted travelling secretary and, when duties permitted, played wing three-quarter. in test match in sydney on may 9 had scored try.


having beaten brisbane team 43 10 earlier on day team-mate died, new zealand blacks weakened departure of 6 players accompany body , make funeral arrangements. remaining members continued on, keeping appointments which, weeks earlier, baskerville secretary may have consented.

the final game in queensland against australia on 30th. new zealand won 24-12. match second in 3 match test series. 4 queenslanders - j. edward baird, micky dore, bill hardcastle , george watson - played in australian team.


new zealand māori

the new zealand māori team played 5 matches in , against queensland. first 3 held @ exhibition ground in brisbane, on june 27, july 1 , 4. queensland lost first 2 (16-19 , 5-13) won third (6-5).

in fourth match, played in toowoomba on july 7, regrettable incident happened past within few minutes of full time, , game ended abruptly . after scuffle between players, maori forward struck queensland player , he, in turn, struck spectator of crowd entered field. referee, micky dore, ordered offending player off field, , [māori captain] asher resenting action led men off field, followed howling mob of spectators . holding 11 9 lead, queensland players remained on field until full time.


remarkably, māori team kept commitment in warwick following day, july 8, queensland won match, 23 14.


inter-state matches

a queensland team ventured sydney play 3 matches, 2 against new south wales on successive saturdays , mid-week match against sydney metropolitan team. played @ royal agricultural ground. full strength side, new south wales won 43-nil on july 11.


early in wednesday match visitors equalised @ five-all, keeping footing on treacherous ground, queenslanders passed beautifully, ball going fihelly hardcastle thompson, scored in corner. @ outset of second half, [arthur] o brien made great run down centre, taking long strides, , fending off 4 tacklers in turn scored splendid try in corner.” took score 12-8. sydney metropolitan, playing magnificent combination ran away match win, 37-8.


the third match played curtain raiser australia versus new zealand māori match. queensland opened scoring: great sprint northerners transferred scene home team’s territory. fine forward play wound try, secured olsen. second string nsw side, however, won 12 points 3.


club matches

the teams appeared in newspaper reports included milton, north brisbane (a & b), st, bridget s , toombul.


on july 4, in curtain-raiser third queensland versus māori match, 2 junior teams met. valley 10 defeated toombul 8.


the brisbane courier listed playing line-ups match between north brisbane (in red , black) , toombul (wearing red, white , blue) on july 18 , printed result, toombul winning 30 points 5, following monday.


the season concluded on september 12 match between toombul , combined thirteen. toombul won match, 37 nil, , consequently, awarded silver medal , captain gold medal, while a. dutton wing forward of toombuls awarded gold medal best individual player.
