the first bridge across river here built in 1506 turlough o brien, first earl of thomond , brother, bishop of killaloe. first bridge made of wood, , burned in 1510 gearóid mór fitzgerald, 8th earl of kildare. o briens rebuilt bridge, time erecting 2 castles, each walls 12 feet (3.7 m) thick, 1 on each side of river. castles stood in water close shore, , connected 7-arch wooden bridge rose 15 feet (4.6 m) above water. bridge destroyed in 1537 leonard grey, lord deputy of ireland under king henry viii of england, after extended battle against o briens, had rebelled. 12-arch stone bridge built next. replaced around 1750, partially replaced in 1842, , modified include navigation arch in 1920s.


at eastern end of today s 12-arch bridge lies village of montpelier in county limerick.


the ancient river-crossing here believed identical Áth caille (meaning ford of wood ): 1 of 3 fords mentioned in triads of ireland, others being Áth clíath (dublin) , Áth lúain (athlone).
