the station located on raised earthen embankment. there 4 tracks , 2 side platforms. 2 center tracks used b express train on weekdays.


the station opened around 1900 two-track surface station , named manhattan terrace. renamed avenue j in 1907, same year railroad line grade separated. vestiges of spur built reconnect brighton line , long island rail road s bay ridge branch after grade separation still exist day.


this station underwent reconstruction september 2009 december 2011. both platforms rebuilt new windscreens, canopies, , tactile strip edges. temporary platform on express tracks used provide service on side under rebuilding. new windscreens controversial nearby community members, since windscreens contained gaps allowed trash , noise through while causing privacy issues residents backyards faced station.


the 2011 artwork here called bird laid bare rita macdonald. consists of murals , mosaics on walls of coney island-bound platform s main staircase depicting various species of birds.


exits

the station s main house located underneath right-of-way on south side of avenue j , has full-time turnstile bank , token booth. there double-wide staircase facing north going coney island-bound platform , 1 narrow staircase facing south going manhattan-bound platform. coney island-bound staircase s landing has 2 exit-only turnstiles leading directly street.


both platforms have unstaffed bank of turnstiles leading staircase goes down north side of avenue j. coney island-bound 1 double-wide.
