this operating system introduced many features appear years come, still existing in current macos, , few existing in other graphical operating systems such microsoft windows.


the features of operating system included finder , menu bar. in addition this, popularized graphical user interface , desktop metaphor, used under license xerox parc.


due limited amount of ram , lack of internal hard disk in original macintosh, there no multitasking multiple applications, although there desktop accessories run while application loaded. also, items in trash permanently deleted when computer shut down or application loaded (quitting finder).


system 1 s total size 216 kb , contained 6 files: system (which includes desk accessories), finder, clipboard, imagewriter printer driver, scrapbook, , note pad. separate disk includes mousing around , beginner s tutorial using mouse; bootable floppy containing customized version of operating system run tutorial.


menu bar

the menu bar new , revolutionary part of os. similar 1 found on lisa os, macintosh menu bar had 5 basic headers when on desktop: apple menu, file, edit, view, , special. when in application, menus change better fit application s uses.


while within finder, apple menu contained finder information, along desktop accessories. file had drop-downs such open, eject, , close. edit had drop-downs cutting, copying, , pasting. special responsible managing hardware , other system functions, , rightmost entry on menu bar in finder. in system 1, menu had items related emptying trash, cleaning desktop, , disk options. system 6, menu allowed user choose alternate startup program run instead of finder @ boot time; feature replaced in system 7 startup items folder in system folder.

system 1 came multiple desk accessories (da). these included alarm clock, calculator, control panel, key caps, note pad, puzzle, , scrapbook. difference between desktop accessories , applications multiple desktop accessories run @ once 1 application run @ time. desktop accessories run on top of application.



alarm clock — da used alarm clock, computer beep, , menu bar flash when alarm s set time reached. used easier way change/set time , date on computer. when opened, show time , date set on computer.
calculator — basic calculator capable of addition, subtraction, multiplication, , division. featured basic 10 buttons input.
control panel — control panel used adjust of settings on computer. made original control panel unique other mac os control panels intended absence of text. chosen demonstrate graphical user interface. representation achieved using symbols. used adjust settings such volume, double click speed, mouse sensitivity, , desktop background. on macintosh 128k, macintosh 512k, , macintosh plus screen brightness controlled mechanical adjustment wheel beneath screen.
key caps — da used show layout of original macintosh keyboard. did not show happened when normal keys pressed along special characters (command, shift, option).
note pad — note taking da save text entered on floppy disk. multiple note pages written when using folded corner symbol in bottom left corner of note page.
puzzle — basic 1-15 slide puzzle, similar picture puzzle found in later versions of mac os.
scrapbook — da similar cut, copy, , paste library. in it, 1 store text selections , photos transferred other applications.
