geography

maria island takes form of figure-eight, northern section of island larger southern. both parts of island have quite rugged relief , joined tombolo 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) long known mcraes isthmus. highest point, mount maria, in northern part of island , stands 711 metres (2,333 ft) above sea level.


flora , fauna

fourteen distinct terrestrial plant communities occur on island, clothed in various forms of eucalypt forest. natural , historical clearings provide grazing many animals, such bare-nosed wombats , tasmanian pademelons. island s animals native tasmania although some, including eastern grey kangaroos, red-necked wallabies , cape barren geese, introduced during late 1960s , 1970s. feral cats descendants of domestic pets brought island since 19th century. fallow deer introduced island , present in french s farm area, wandered far north small marsh behind hopground beach. sheep present until around 1981, escapes prior sheep farming operations. other animals include common brushtail , ringtail possums, short-beaked echidnas , 3 species of snake.

maria island has been identified birdlife international important bird area (iba) because supports significant numbers of endangered swift parrots , forty-spotted pardalotes, on 1% of world population of pacific gulls, populations of of tasmania’s endemic bird species.


tasmanian devils

in november 2012 captive tasmanian devils introduced island , cared tasmania parks , wildlife service staff live on island. these devils form part of insurance population of devils unaffected devil facial tumour disease sweeping through mainland tasmania s devil population. because maria island s devils subject strict quarantine, visitors island not able see or interact them. there evidence devils impacting on bird life of island.


marine habitats

the marine section of national park protects representative area of tasmanian east coast marine habitat, , has larger individuals , populations of key marine species surrounding waters. area 1 of intensively studied marine protected areas in australia , popular divers. marine section of park extends unnamed point north-east of bishop , clerk, westwards cape boullanger , southwards far return point. marine boundary’s definition varies, never more 1 km maria island s low water mark.
